Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control equipment through a button or rotary knob. These devices feature mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop motors.

Important Note: Manual starters do not break control circuits during power loss, which means motors may restart automatically when power is restored.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which engages the vehicle's flywheel through a gear system (starter drive or Bendix).

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark.
