Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices that provide straightforward motor control without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that mechanically opens or closes contacts to start or stop the motor.

Important Safety Note: Manual starters do not break the control circuit during power loss, which means the motor may restart automatically when power is restored. This characteristic should be considered for safety-critical applications.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or ignition key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which then engages the vehicle's flywheel through a gear system (starter drive or Bendix).

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process. Once the engine is running independently, the starter motor disengages from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires electrical assistance.
