Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are devices operated manually, offering simple operation without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that opens or closes contacts to start or stop the motor through mechanical linkages.

Note: Manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause automatic motor restart when voltage returns - an important safety consideration for certain applications.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers charge from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor.

The electrical current activates both the starter motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system), which engages the vehicle's flywheel. As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process in petrol and diesel vehicles.

Once the engine is running, the mechanism disconnects the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
