Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that provide direct control over connected equipment. Featuring either a button or rotary knob, these starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, enabling motor operation without requiring expert intervention.

Important Note: Manual starters do not break the control circuit during power loss, which means connected motors may automatically restart when power returns. This characteristic requires careful consideration for safety-critical applications.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component:

  1. Channels power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor
  2. Activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system)
  3. Engages the vehicle's flywheel
  4. Initiates the combustion process in petrol/diesel engines

Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
