Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, user-friendly devices operated manually without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that controls the connected equipment through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop the motor.

Manual starters do not break the control circuit during power loss, which means the motor may restart automatically when power is restored. This characteristic requires careful consideration in certain applications.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which then engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle's flywheel.

The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running independently, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as external electrical assistance is no longer required.
