Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices that control equipment through a button or rotary knob. These starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Unlike automatic starters, they don't break the control circuit during power loss, which means the motor may restart automatically when power returns.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the battery to the starter motor, which activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system). The starter motor then engages the vehicle's flywheel, cranking the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel engines.

Once the engine is running, the starter motor disengages from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
