Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices that enable users to turn connected equipment on or off. These starters feature a button or rotary knob with mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to control motor operation.

Important Note: Manual starters do not break control circuits during power loss, which means motors may restart automatically when power is restored. This may require special safety considerations in certain applications.

Starter Motor Operation

When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component:

  1. Channels power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor
  2. Activates the starter motor and starter drive (Bendix gear system)
  3. Engages the vehicle's flywheel to crank the engine
  4. Initiates the combustion process in petrol and diesel engines

Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
