Manual Starters Overview

Manual starters are simple, manually-operated devices that provide straightforward motor control without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that mechanically opens or closes contacts to start or stop the motor.

Starter Motor Operation

The starting process begins when the driver activates the ignition system (via stop/start button or traditional key), sending an electrical signal to the starter solenoid. This component then:

  • Channels power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor
  • Activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system)
  • Engages the vehicle's flywheel to crank the engine

Once combustion begins and the engine runs independently, the starter motor automatically disengages from the flywheel, completing the starting sequence.
