Excavator Alternator Not Charging: A Logical Test Sequence
Check belt drive, battery state, output path, grounds and excitation before blaming the alternator.
Inspect before measuring
Check belt condition and tension, pulley alignment, output cable, plug security, fusible links, grounds and battery terminals. Look for heat discoloration, corrosion and damaged insulation. Verify the battery is serviceable before evaluating charging behavior.
Measure the circuit as a system
Record battery voltage with the engine stopped and running under the conditions specified by the service manual. If alternator output exists at the main terminal but not at the battery, investigate the cable and protection devices. If output is absent, confirm that the field or excitation circuit receives the required signal.
Order from the complete specification
When replacement is justified, provide OEM number, voltage, amperage, pulley and connector photos, mounting dimensions, machine and engine model. This prevents a second diagnosis problem caused by an alternator that fits mechanically but uses a different regulator or terminal arrangement.
